Cracking down on child pornography is good for everyone in society. Doing it in stupid ways is bad for everyone in society.

This week a Michigan Court of Appeals panel upheld two lower courts who ruled that the act of copying a file containing child pornography will make you responsible for a 20 year felony of making pornography, instead of the four year offense of possessing it.

So a guy who has an automatic backup system on his computer that backs up files to a remote or secondary drive automatically every 24-48 hours and who gets sent a CP image thru spam will face 20 years. Perhaps legislators ought to just up the punishments for posessing CP rather than trying to re-write the laws to make everyone a producer.
